Context: Farmers in Tanzania are facing escalating vulnerability due to the gradual impacts of climate change. Extended dry seasons and erratic, violent rainfall have depleted farmlands of essential nutrients, exacerbating the challenges for farmers who lack the means to invest in costly agricultural resources. The alarming progression of desertification, intensified by inadequate human interventions, challenges more subsistence farmers every day. In response, Justdiggit, drawing inspiration from indigenous land restoration practices, has been collaborating with local NGOs for over a decade. Their mission is to educate farmers and implement soil interventions across the African continent.

With a wealth of experience, Justdiggit aimed to extend their impact by creating a mobile application that could provide tailored regenerative agriculture advice to millions of subsistence farmers, beginning with selected regions in Tanzania

Mission: Our role was to design a comprehensive learning experience and develop sufficient courses to establish a minimum viable product. The project commenced with an analysis of existing training materials. To crystallise the application's objectives and establish a framework, we conducted several co-creation sessions. Subsequently, we tested our assumptions with farmers in Dodoma, who were the intended end-users. The feedback from our initial prototype testing was invaluable, guiding us to incorporate visual elements, particularly moving images with relatable faces and words, as they proved to be the most effective in engaging users.

Recognising the importance of understanding the local context, we collaborated with a local filmmaker to produce authentic content in Dodoma. This firsthand experience allowed us to better grasp the reality faced by our end users. Over time, we meticulously refined and developed the course content to ensure a compelling and meaningful learning experience.

As the application continues its development at New Nexus under the dedicated supervision of the Justdiggit team, we have successfully delivered the final course content and guidelines for future courses on the app.

“Collaborating with Cedric and Aline on our Regreen App was very helpful, especially during the concept phase! They skillfully navigated and visualised diverse stakeholder ideas, refining key elements and translated it into prototypes. Their UX research, including Tanzanian farmers, provided invaluable insights. The clear presentation of the results influenced the app's development. A truly inspiring and impactful partnership.”
